The title refers to the fact that when Lessing took Diski in as a ‘troubled’ teenager Diski was unable to figure out how she was meant to show her gratitude, as From Anakana Schofield. I’m often drawn back to Jenny Diski’s fiction, whose territory stretched from the Bible to a rainforest to mentally distressed adolescents to a baby without a brain, though it is commonly overlooked in any discussion of her life’s work, which came to an end when she died two springs ago at home in Cambridge, England. Jenny Diski was a British writer. Diski was a prolific writer of fiction and nonfiction articles, reviews and books.

Jenny Diski was born in 1947 in London, where she has lived most of her life. I miss Jenny Diski. I started reading the London Review of Books in earnest when she started publishing her cancer diary there, from September 2014 onwards.

Jenny Diski was a fearless writer, for whom no subject was too difficult, even her own cancer diagnosis. Her columns in the London Review of Books – selected here by her editor and friend Mary-Kay Wilmers, on subjects as various as death, motherhood, sexual politics and the joys of solitude – have been described as 'virtuoso performances', and 'small masterpieces'.
